Doodling in Math: Vi Hart Videos

I just stumbled upon Vi Hart videos while searching for educational videos on YouTube. I was totally captivated by her "Doodling in Math" series.  I only wish that these videos would have been available when I was in school.
These videos are interesting for all learners, but especially interesting for visual learners.  Students and teachers will be amazed by these video clips!
Vi Hart now works for Khan Academy and many of her videos are linked to KhanAcademy.org.

To begin with, you should view Doodling in Math: Sick Number Games:

Don't stop there... view many more of her video clips "Doodling in Math_____" series.

Art teachers may also want to use some of these ideas to integrate more math into the art curriculum.  I think most students would love to learn how to create Hexaflexagons:

FREE Reading Passages K-6

ReadWorks provides over 1,000 non-fiction reading passages with question sets to support reading activities.
Readworks.org highly recommends using ReadWorks non-fiction reading passages & question sets for BOTH read aloud instruction AND independent student reading.
Therefore the text complexity of passages varies within each grade and across all grades, as reflected in the Lexile levels.
Research shows that exposing students to more complex text through read aloud is vital to increasing vocabulary & background knowledge, and supportive of independent reading.

Speakaboos - animated stories read by celebrities

Speakaboos is an amazing site that was shared with me by Renee Combs, 2nd grade teacher, East Albemarle Elementary.  Thanks for sharing Renee!

Speakaboos  is an online site with award-winning videos that teach reading skills, life lessons, and creativity in a fun and safe environment. Each story comes to life with educational worksheets, activities, and games. Speakaboos' timeless tales are ideal for kids of any age.

Speakaboos brings classic children's entertainment into a digital world. Beloved characters and treasured stories are given new life through amazing celebrity performances, beautiful illustrations, and original music. At Speakaboos, children develop literacy skills while learning about technology in a safe and fun environment.

I found this site while searching for an online version of "A Christmas Carol."  Then I realized it had many other books online.  I like it because it includes the text with the stories as they are read to the students.  I have added it to my Class blog as a website to be used on the days students work on "Listening to Reading" during "Daily 5" centers (CAFE). ~ Renee Combs

Visuwords - Online Graphical Dictionary

Visuwords™ online graphical dictionary — Look up words to find their meanings and associations with other words and concepts. Produce diagrams reminiscent of a neural net. Learn how words associate.

Enter words into the search box to look them up or double-click a node to expand the tree. Click and drag the background to pan around and use the mouse wheel to zoom. Hover over nodes to see the definition and click and drag individual nodes to move them around to help clarify connections.

  • It's a dictionary! It's a thesaurus!
  • Great for writers, journalists, students, teachers, and artists.
  • The online dictionary is available wherever there’s an internet connection.
  • No membership required.
Example using the word "water"
